We are delighted to welcome Baroness Jill Pitkeathley (née Bisson) to be our speaker at a lunch on 21st March 2015.

Baroness Pitkeathley was born in Guernsey and was an evacuee in Yorkshire during the second world war. She then attended Capelles School and the Ladies College, and took her degree at Bristol University.

She was chief executive of Carers UK for which she was awarded the OBE in 1993, and became a life peer in 1997. Since 1998 Baroness Pitkeathley has been chair of one of the lottery fund distributors, and in 2004 she was appointed chair of the Children and Family Court Advisory and Support Service, the independent body set up to safeguard the welfare of children in family court proceedings. Since 2002 she has also worked as Deputy Speaker and Deputy Chair of Committees in the House of Lords, and is a senior Labour Party member. She is a member of the Parliamentary All Party Channel Islands Group, and her dedication to Guernsey is such that her son was born on 9th May! She is a regular visitor to Guernsey, often in an official capacity.

She has been recognised around the world for her support of social rights. Next Meeting in London: Imperial War Museum, 22 November 2014

Our next meeting in London will be a visit to the Imperial War Museum on 22 November 2014.

We will meet for lunch at The Three Stags (opposite the museum) at 12:00.

Full details of the itinerary to follow, but the Imperial War Museum has just undergone a major renovation as part of the WW1 centenary – for more details see the IWM website.

Nearest tube for both venues is Lambeth North (Northern Line).

Meeting in London: Guernsey Archaeology since 2000, 4 October 2014

LaVarde_passage_graveOn 4 October, we welcome Tanya Walls of the Guernsey Museums Service as our guest speaker. She will talk about findings and developments in Archaeology in Guernsey since 2000.

Tanya has helped update Peter Johnston’s A Short History of Guernsey (6th edition) which is being published by the Guernsey Society in October. Members will be able to purchase advance copies at the meeting at a special price.

Meeting in London – Boules Muratti, 14 June 2014

The Boules Muratti – our annual match against the Jersey Society – will be held in the idyllic setting of Cleaver Square – one of London’s finest Georgian Squares. An added attraction of the Square is that it has a pub, The Prince of Wales, where traditional pub food is available until 3.00pm.

Boules is suitable for people of all ages and abilities. If you have a set of Boules, please bring it along.

Meeting in London – AGM, 10 May 2014

Next Saturday is our Annual General Meeting in London, followed by our annual Chairman’s Quiz.

As usual, we will meet for lunch at 12 noon, and will aim to wrap the AGM fairly promptly, so that we can get on with the (Guernsey-themed) Quiz.

RGLI Talk in Guernsey, 15 July 2014

RGLI Talk 15 July 2014
The Guernsey Society is organising a talk entitled “WW1 and the role of the RGLI” as part of the island’s commemoration of the start of World War I. It will cover the background to the war in general, as well as a more detailed look at the contribution of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry.

The talk will take place at the Frossard Theatre at the Guernsey Museum, Candie, St Peter Port on 15th July 2014, starting at 8pm.

Rory Stephens, the speaker, is a WW1 military historian and experienced battlefield guide, who led the successful RGLI Battlefield Tour to France and Belgium in September 2013.

Tickets are £7 (or £5 for Guernsey Society members), and are available from the Museum, guernseytickets.gg or Michael Paul (phone 01481 253858).

President’s Lunch – 15 February 2014

I am delighted to tell you that the Bailiff of Guernsey and also our President, Mr Richard Collas, will join us for a lunch on Saturday 15th February 2014.

At the lunch, we will display some of the highlights from the Society’s 70th anniversary year, including the ‘Occupation Words’ competition in Guernsey schools, and the trip to the World War 1 battlefields of the Royal Guernsey Light Infantry. We also look forward to the Bailiff giving us an update on current events in Guernsey.

The lunch will be held at the Charing Cross Hotel, starting at 12.00 and the cost is £35 per head.
