caption

Jerripedia is an initiative to collect and share knowledge about Jersey's people, places and heritage. Although Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, it is still only a 45 square mile rock in the English Channel. It has a fascinating history for a place so small and islanders have spread their influence throughout the world over the centuries. Please take a look around this site to learn more about Jersey, its history, local families whose names can now be found across the globe and much, much more. This site is growing all the time and anyone is welcome to make a contribution - see the box below to find out how to go about editing and adding articles of your own.

Feature article

Changes in 19th century Jersey

Jersey underwent a population explosion in the first half of the 19th century. Within only 30 years the population doubled as new residents arrived by the boatload from England, seeking their fortunes in a bustling community, or simply hoping to eke out their pensions in an island with a pleasant climate and low taxes. This population growth in Victorian Jersey brought about dramatic changes in an island which had previously spoken French and had an entirely different lifestyle to the towns of England. The language changed, the currency changed, thousands of new homes were built, and the immigrants did not always get on well with the longer-established residents.
