The Review

The Review also contains a range of articles on island affairs, past and present - including a transcript of the talk on Sir Ambrose Sherwill given by his granddaughter, Jane Devonald, at our May meeting in London; details of artist Antony Gormley's recent installation in Guernsey; "The Giant's Bowl Fire" tells the story of a big satellite dish left in Guernsey after the German occupation; Dorothy Dowding recounts the story of her grandfather and his ship 'Agilis'; a copy of a letter from Frederick Le Mesurier dated 1782 about life at sea in the 18th century; as well as the fourth part of Eric Grimsley's Centenary of Scouting in Guernsey.

This month's Book Review features Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, a novel set in post-occupation Guernsey by Mary Ann Schaffer and Mined Where You Walk, the story of the German Occupation of Sark, by Richard Le Tissier which are available from our Bookshop.

It also includes all the latest news from Guernsey, as well as details of new members and Society meetings.

Meetings in London

Our next UK meeting on Saturday 11th October will offer members the opportunity to experience the background to an opera written by a Guernseyman about 18th Century Guernsey called "Le Vier Guernesey". Léonie Scott-Matthews will give a talk, with musical accompaniment about this opera written by her grandfather, Guernsey's own composer, John Matthews (1856-1938).

Non-members are always welcome at Society meetings, and may join the Society at meetings if they wish.

Meetings in Guernsey

Our next meeting in Guernsey will be Wednesday 15 October, lunch at The Absolute End, followed by a visit to the Chateau de Marais (Ivy Castle).

Meetings in Australia

The Channel Islands Social Group are organising a Picnic in the Park on Sunday, 7 December at Tusmore Park, Adelaide.
