The Guernsey Society to publish updated edition of Peter Johnston’s ‘A Short History of Guernsey’

ash_front_coverThe Society is delighted to announce that it has published a completely revised and updated edition of A Short History of Guernsey by Peter Johnston.

Since the original publication first appeared in 1976, it has provided a very popular account of the island’s history to both islanders and tourists.

Peter Johnston wrote his original work whilst living and working in Guernsey. Since then he has retired overseas, and has agreed to cede his copyright royalties to the Guernsey Society, of which he remains a  Vice President, on the condition that the Society updated and reprinted it.

Since the last substantial update in 1994, much has changed in the island. For example, the revised text now includes many archaeological findings (particularly relating to the Roman period) that have come to light since the early 1990s, as well as bringing the history right up to the present day.

The new edition boasts a completely revised format, with a brand new selection of colour illustrations throughout. The revised Appendices that provide a timeline of Guernsey history, and suggestions for further reading.

A Short History of Guernsey will be generally available from October 2014, but we are offering members the opportunity to place their orders at a special pre-publication price – see ‘A Short History of Guernsey’ for details.
