On a lovely Saturday afternoon in June, members of the Jersey Society in London and Guernsey Society members met to play the 2025 Boules Muratti.
This was the first Boules Muratti for a few years, having been interrupted first by Covid, and then the absence of the Jersey team. So it was most enjoyable to get together again in the pleasant surroundings of Cleaver Square, Kennington.
The first round of three matches started excellently for Guernsey, with a complete whitewash win of 13-0. However the other two matches were much more competitive, both resulting in narrow wins for Jersey, making the half-time score 2-1.
Half-time refreshments were available on the hot afternoon from the Prince of Wales pub in the corner of the square, and the teams then re-grouped for the second round of matches. The first match was very close, getting to 12-12 and meaning that the final end would be decisive. Guernsey got a boule within three inches of the jack, (or more correctly cochonnet), and seemed to be sure of victory when Jersey responded with almost the last throw, getting an inch closer, and winning the game 13-12.
Perhaps this narrow defeat affected Guernsey morale, as they then went down to two further (respectable) losses, leaving Jersey 5-1 winners on the day and therefore retaining the Boules Muratti trophy.

A good day was had by all, in a most friendly way. Although the Guernsey boules team couldn’t replicate the success of Guernsey’s Muratti footballers this year, they look forward to challenging their Jersey opponents in next year’s Boules Muratti.
